CEO Craig Barrett unveiled an Intel-branded MP3 player at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. 128Mg on board memory and handles MP3 and WMA files. The move towards having more Intel-branded products could be quite interesting. Watch out Sony!

06/01/01 Sony lays over!
Well, it seems that Sony 'is' pro-mp3. Ron Boire's (president of Sony Electronics' Personal Mobile Products company) comment '..we had to do it.' is quite an about-face from it's stance against the MP3 movement. Sony's new venture into the MP3 CD market has not pleased all within the company spread but we will be seeing a Sony MP3 CD solution soon it seems. There seems to be NO information available on the www.sony.com site at this point so if someone finds some details please let us know.

15/11/00 MP3.com ordered to pay $53.4 million in digital copyright case
MP3.com Inc. yesterday was ordered to pay $53.4 million to Universal Music Group Inc. The payment is to be made in settlement for copyright infringement charges. MP3.com does not plan to appeal the judgment. MP3.com reportedly paid about $20 million to settle each of the cases to Warner Brothers Music Group Inc., EMI Group PLC, BMG Entertainment Inc. and Sony Music Entertainment Inc.

11/11/00 MP3.com copyright-infringement case to start.
This coming Monday MP3.com will be ordered to pay damages to Seagram Co.'s Universal Music Group for copyright infringement. The trial will be watched closely by media groups, the music industry and MP3.com stock holders. Listen.com buys up $5m worth of Scour and it's assets. Scour has developed a little slice of the file-sharing pie over the years and now has an interesting partner. Just as Napster allows you to open up your hard drive to share mp3 files, Scour allows the same service but opens up the range to 'multimedia' files. 16/10/00 It has been reported that two major traditional Australian music chains will no longer stock recordings from publisher Festival Mushroom Group in retaliation to Festival Mushroom Group granting sanity.com.au exclusive rights to electronic distribution and sales of their songs. 15/10/00 According to Nielsen Media Research daily use of Napster has almost doubled, to almost 850,000 unique home visitors last Friday, covering more then three percent of all active users on the Internet. Not only is traffic skyrocketing, but downloads of the software have almost doubled, reaching around 22 percent of it’s audience online.

14/10/00 The ONLY celebration of Australian contemporary music is on again!

The 11th Annual Australian Music Week is due to happen 14 - 21 October, 2000. Australian Music Week (AMW) annually aims to provide opportunities for the best in emerging and established Australian contemporary talent, with the intention of increasing sales of domestic records and tickets to live performances. AMW is coordinated by the Australian Music Foundation Inc, a not-for-profit Foundation, dedicated to the promotion and expansion of music development in Australia. Official patrons for AMW 2000 are: Killing Heidi with supporting ambassadors including Michael Spiby, Groove Terminator, s2s, Sugarlips, Marie Wilson, Sneak, Bodyjar and The Mavis's. Australian Music Week 2000 is being launched in Adelaide at City SK8 Park (North Terrace) on Wednesday 11 October at 11am. Guest speakers at the launch will include Ella Hooper from Killing Heidi and Brian Cadd (President of Australian Music Foundation Inc.). There will also be performances by The Trims, Gawler High School Band, Gawler Skate Kru and DJs Pabb & Griff. Other AMW highlights are the 2nd Annual Australian Live Music Awards on 17 October in Melbourne and a variety of instore appearances across the country.

01/10/00 Call for submissions to new MPEG4 standard.
WG11 issues a call for evidence justifying the subjective testing of new audio coding technology in comparison with the MPEG-4 audio coding technology. At the 55th MPEG meeting, to be held January 15-19, 2001 in Eilat Israel, interested parties are asked to provide clear evidence that their technology outperforms MPEG-4 technology.
